Franco Giraudo
Allan Drash 2019 Awardees
Diagnosed with T1D at the age of 7, Franco has dedicated a large part of his life to working with people with diabetes and their families as a way to give back the support he received. Franco has worked since before starting his studies in the field of childhood and adolescent diabetes as a peer educator in several organizations and then as the regional coordinator of the Young Leaders in Diabetes (YLD), an IDF program.
MD of the University of Chile, he is currently a student of PhD in Medical Sciences and Residency on Pediatrics, doing his doctoral thesis with Dr. Ethel Codner, investigating the effect of hormonal contraception in adolescents with T1D. He is also the medical adviser of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Chile (FDJ), an NGO dedicated to education for patients with T1D and their community, which contains as members an estimated 50% of the people living with T1D in Chile.
His interest is translating research and applying basic research elements to the real lives of children and adolescents living with diabetes.
At the same time, he is deeply interested in generating an important registry at the local and regional levels since, unlike many other countries, Chile and Latin America generally lack reliable information on the health situation of people living with diabetes.
In the future, Dr. Giraudo will continue working at the Institute for Mother and Child Research (IDIMI) of the University of Chile, where children's diabetologists are trained, and the FDJ, mixing the art and science of medicine as a clinician, educator, researcher, and professor.
For this reason, Franco considers it very important to have the opportunity to experience other realities, in other cultures and with other media, about the care of children and adolescents with diabetes. “It is a privilege to be able to learn from ISPAD’s center of excellence, and I’m very excited about the idea of taking advantage of this experience,” Franco says.

She currently practices at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Hyderabad, as a consultant in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes. Being an avid nature lover with a fascination for the intricate ways life systems, including the human body and work, she chose medicine as her career. She graduated from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, in Southern India, in 2002. She secured an extremely competitive residency position in Pediatrics at PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research), Chandigarh, where she completed her M.D. Pediatrics. She trained further in pediatric emergency medicine as a clinical fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, CA.
Upon returning to Bangalore, India, she started practicing pediatrics and pediatric emergency. It is during these years that she came across children with a variety of endocrine conditions, including Diabetes. Drawn by the complex yet interesting field and realizing the scarcity of expertise in pediatric endocrinology in her country, she pursued a career in this field by doing a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at IGICH, Bangalore. Further, she fine-tuned it through an observership at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. She participated in APEG-APPES and a fellow school held in Darwin during this period.
She presented oral papers and posters at national conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals, and contributed a chapter to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics textbook on Pediatric Endocrinology. She also translated patient information material on Diabetes and Congenital Hypothyroidism into her regional language, Telugu.
She was instrumental in creating the Pediatric Diabetes for Postgraduates (PDP) teaching program for practicing pediatricians and PG trainees to make them confident enough to deal with children with diabetes. She is a strong proponent of Universal newborn screening, especially for Congenital Hypothyroidism, and is closely working with like-minded people to lobby state government officials to start a screening program.
She believes her training at Cambridge will help her establish a comprehensive Childhood diabetes care center at her place. It would also give her the much-needed exposure to establishing clinical research projects in Type 1 Diabetes. Using this experience, she hopes to streamline the PDP program as a standard teaching tool for all pediatric trainees.
She is indebted to Dr. Carlo Acerini, without whose encouragement, guidance, and support she would not have had this wonderful opportunity. For the short time she knew him, he made a big difference. May his soul rest in peace.
