Humanitarian Crises

A better world for children, adolescents, and young adults with diabetes.

ISPAD's Statement on humanitarian crises is as follows:

Manmade or natural disasters have occurred throughout history. During these events, societal norms and structures may collapse, impacting healthcare delivery for children, adolescents, and young adults with diabetes. Disruptions to food supply and life-saving drugs such as insulin can have rapid and catastrophic consequences. The immediacy of insulin requirement means that the health of children and adolescents with diabetes should be prioritised by governmental and non-governmental healthcare providers when responding to such disruptive events. While ISPAD cannot facilitate direct healthcare delivery, we remain willing to support our colleagues and partners who are providing care in these situations. Such support includes membership in the International Alliance for Diabetes Action, the publication of therapy guidelines, and providing links with intact regional pediatric diabetes care networks. ISPAD continues to assert that all children with diabetes, regardless of race, religion, or national origin, deserve the best possible care and should be protected from the effects of natural cataclysm or human violence.

All children with diabetes deserve the best possible care and to be protected from the effects of natural disasters and human violence.
